If you are finding yourself here on a new adventure into dairy free living, you are in the right place! This is a place where we can dive into the day-to-day struggles and victories living a life with a dairy free diet. Let me introduce myself, I'm Allison and I've been dairy free since 2016. I developed a dairy allergy in my early 20's and after struggling to cut it out of my diet for a year finally stopped eating it in 2016. I am not vegan but do enjoy my fair share of vegan foods.
As you begin this journey, I'm sure you have begun to see the difficulty that accompanies a diary free lifestyle. Dairy is in the majority of foods you come across. You may think "oh, I can just order it without cheese" and be good to go. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Usually going out to eat will involve reading a spreadsheet or chart to find something available for you. Over the last 7 years I have gone through so many of those charts and PDF's so my goal here is to make it more digestible for people and easier to find things you can eat and feel comfortable with. As someone who suffers with social anxiety I prefer to go into a restaurant with a plan and general idea of what I can get but always remember how important it is to tell your server or staff that you have an allergy regardless. As menu items can change or cross contamination can happen. Most restaurants will have protocols in place to help reduce the chance of you getting sick when you alert them to your allergy.
I hope to help make this transition a little easier on you as I know it can be daunting. These days there are an abundance of options available to you even ones you wouldn't think exist.
